Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer

American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer

An unassuming young man Dahmer came across as being “one of the crowd”

The first thing I noticed when I read about Jeffrey Dahmer is that he didn’t really get a nickname from the local media or news channels who reported on his crimes. He was locally known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal” which is very apt as he probably was the closest thing to a real life Hannibal Lecter as you could get.

An interesting point to realise about Dahmer was that his MO “Modus Operandi” was that instead of attacking and killing women all of his victims were male. Most male serial killers tend to kill victims of the opposite sex as this gives them a sense of power and control over a less dominant sex, so Dahmer’s case has a strange twist to it.

Dahmer confessed 17 murders yet he was only convicted of 15. All his victims were young boys or men between the ages of 14 and 36 years old. Dahmer, a homosexual himself would sometime lure the young men or boys into his apartment with the promise of intercourse. The murders would usually happen after this.

His career as a serial killer started in 1978 and stretched all the way through to 1991. Thirteen years! I am relatively young, and I get quite a chill when I think that all this was happening during my lifetime. Especially when Dahmer made his first appearance in court.

Described as an ordinary and straightforward young man who blends into the background, no one could have guessed that this “average Joe” was responsible for torturing, murdering and ultimately eating some of his victims.

Dahmer became an alcoholic at the age of 18 years and it was at this tender young age that he murdered his first victim. In 1978 Dahmer acquainted himself with a young male hitchhiker who he beat to death after they had sexual intercourse.

His crimes, some too gruesome to go into detail, were committed in Milwaukee where Dahmer would cruise the streets at night seeking out male victims. Many times Dahmer would dis-member his victims and keep the choice parts in his fridge, saving them for dinner at a later time.

To get an idea of the type of character Dahmer was portrayed to be I have included this snippet of his first ever court appearance in Milwaukee. Notice how slight his frame is

Very similar to that of Hannibal the Cannibal in Silence of the Lambs, Dahmer was kept in isolation during his incarceration at Columbia Correctional Institution where he was sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms but a fellow in-mate cut that short when at the age of 34 years he was killed on November 28th 1994.

Poetic justice?
